Chapter 7. The Message

“I’ve sent out letters,” says Taro, when he corners Cheron the next morning. The female dragon looks baffled, although Taro can hardly blame her. It’s so early that the sun hasn’t yet burnt away the fog. Taro steps close to the aide, so they can converse in hushed tones. “I’ve sent them to the humans.”

“Why would you do that?”

“Because it’s what must be done,” says Taro, firmly. “I spoke with Creston earlier. You can ask the healers – she’s awake. I spoke with her, and she told me what she saw in that cloud. It is home to griffins, and their shadow based magic. They have come to settle a feud that doesn’t really exist. Their leaders are twisted things, and they’ve convinced their flock that attacking and killing all of the humans is the only way to get vengeance.”

Rather than ask how Taro knows this, Cheron chooses to ask, “so you sent out a warning?”

Taro takes a deep breath. “I sent out an offer for help.”

“What? Taro,” yelps Cheron. “You can’t do that! Making that decision without consulting me is – “

“Exactly what a king does. This is what our people need, Cheron. If war comes to the humans, we will be caught in it. The griffins hold no care for dragons, nor for this kingdom. They will plough it down just as they have gone through every other land on their way here. Even now, they kill all that they pass over; they ruin all that they touch.”

Cheron stares at Taro with wide, frightened eyes. “The humans will kill us while we sleep.”

“Hardly. I can speak for the humans when I say that we are vastly more afraid of you than the other way around.” Taro gives her a patient smile. “If we can join forces with the humans as they come into these lands, we should be able to catch the beasts off guard. They might lay damage onto this kingdom, but it won’t be decimated.”

“If they come to destroy the humans, we’ll just take flight,” counters Cheron. “We have migrated to other lands before, and we won’t do it again.”

“Will you just leave the injured, then? What about those that are too young to fly?”

Cheron almost looks ashamed of the suggestion. “That’s just how life is with us.”

“No,” says Taro. “It’s how life used to be. You turned your backs on the rest of society, and it landed you with the title of heartless monsters. Do you really want that to continue being your namesake?”

“We don’t care – “

“You might not,” says Taro. “But others do. I do. This is what’s going to happen, Cheron. It’s my first lone proclamation as king. We’re going to work together with the humans. That’s final.”

Cheron’s face twists into a fang filled snarl. It’s the first time that she’s looked angry with the dragon king, since his coronation. “Then you can make the announcement, or you can get Therantil to do it for you.”

Taro doesn’t know how he’s supposed to make an announcement of this magnitude, so he ends up seeking out Therantil.
